No, they don't tell you you're being passed over because of your age, because that's illegal. But when you have been contacted about a resume, interviewed twice on the phone by several hiring managers, and then lose the job the minute you show up for a face-to-face, you know it's ageism, racism, or sexism, but it has nothing to do with your skills. Especially if it happens over and over again.

Careful, there. You, Sarah, may be quite confident it is one or more of those things in your own case (particularly if you are over 40, female, and non-white). But don't generalize to others. I'm not sure that _everyone_ who repeatedly loses jobs at the first face-to-face interview can safely make that assumption. Some people are repeatedly passed over because they are physically unattractive in ways that make other people uncomfortable (bad odors, bad grooming, extreme obesity). Rejecting someone for that reason is despicable, but it is not always illegal. Some people are rejected because they are defensive, painfully introverted, or have distracting nervous tics. Again, rejecting somebody because of such characteristics, assuming they do not arise from a protected disability, is probably legal.

You can't change your age, your sex (unless you want to), or your race; but it's possible to work on some of the other things that interfere with getting hired. And for those people who suffer from such problems, it's easier to engage in some self-improvement (not easy, just easier) than to get other people to behave better. Been there, done that, proved that it works.
