When the rate is first offered, the senior technical writer full of wisdom
and experience cannily replies:
"...that's in addition to the standard per diem, of course. And exactly how
much is your company's standard per diem?"
I've occasionally had to explain "per diem", but more often not. One
headhunter even admitted that he was prepared to charge it to the client and
pocket it ($150 per day for a 3-month contract) if I was not savvy enough to
bring it up. I suspect that more than one of them does exactly that.
