I disagree. What you are saying is that you cannot be friends with
professionals. A master's thesis is most certainly a professional
publication and not simply "a friend's paper." An copyediting an article
written for publication certainly counts!

With that logic, I could not use my friend as a job reference, even though
she was my manager for years.

We're not in high school anymore.
