I'll not only reinforce Gene on this, I'll double reinforce this. IT guys know bupkes about technical writing, and tend to give out absolutely minimalist hardware to tech writers. Be polite but firm and explain why you need a high performance engine. I frequently have the following open simultaneously:

Adobe InDesign
Adobe Photoshop
Microsoft Word
iTunes/Windows Media Player
an email program
a terminal emulator logged in to a machine in the lab
an FTP program downloading from the lab machine
a browser

And that's a typical day. On a bad day I have all of those open with multiple documents in each, plus Adobe Illustrator, Acrobat Professional and GoLive.

This requires serious processing power. Since I frequently work at home, I just upgraded to an Intel based iMac. Your chances of getting one in a corporate environment are slim, but you can duplicate the specs and hand them to IT. Best of luck.
