For the benefit of those of us in the rest of the world, could
someone perhaps explain to us roughly what the terms `W2' and `1099'
mean?

It's a tax thing...the names relate to the appropriate IRS forms.

W2 payments mean that the taxes have already been withheld...you get
what's left. 1099 payments mean that you get the entire amount.
There's almost always a pay difference, too, with W2 folks getting a
bit less an hour.

There's also a difference in how the work is performed. The IRS
considers someone an employee (W2) if the employer dictates when and
where and how much they work, and considers someone a contractor if
the employer sets a deadline. (There's a checklist on the IRS site at
irs.gov with more information.)
