Thanks for sharing your methods. Here's what I've been doing with Outlook. For email I can't answer in the current moment, I flag it. Then I archive it where I would normally put it. I clear out my entire inbox this way. Then I use the Search Folders and create a search folder that aggregates all flagged email. This keeps my inbox clear without losing the important messages I still need to respond to. Because my inbox is clean, I'm more prompt about doing something with the incoming email. It works.

I also use Outlook Express and another email address for all listserv email. I also use filters to group them into the appropriate folders. This keeps my personal mail separated from general email (except for spam).

When it comes to regular files, I'm terrible. I do not seem to have the discipline to keep them organized well. Wish there was a way of enforcing that.

I also use FeedDemon, an RSS reader, to read and keep up with blogs.

Tom

I'd hardly call it "innovative," but here's what I do.

- For email, I create separate folders in Outlook for specific categories (
e.g. one for TechWR-L, one for Admin, one for Procedures, etc.). Where
possible, I set up a rule that directs new email to them automatically. This
is only possible if there are characteristics that you can guarantee are
part of a message that fits that category - for TechWR-L, for example, I
know that the list email address will be involved.

- For electronic files, I create folders in Windows Explorer for files of
specific types (downloads, time sheets, etc.). This is over and above the
"enforced" file management that comes with our source control software for
the actual documentation files. I never use the desktop for anything other
that shortcuts to applications I want to run.

I'm curious to know if anyone has any innovative methods of organization.
I'm referring to organization of pretty much everything -- e-mail, paper,
electronic files, etc. I know I sometimes get more and more buried in
email;
have scattered electronic files on my desktop, and have paper documenets
sprawled out across my desk. Is organization even that important?
