Thank you, all of you, for your responses. I've been uneasy with the angle brackets, but they did so help to call out the italicized code font, which is difficult to read. Using plain italics alongside code font strikes me as odd, but it does fix the problem of distinguishing between a monospace font and a monospace font with italics overlaid. Maybe that is the way to go.
