I'm of two minds about writing tests. While a short test can tell you a
lot about the writer's competency, but it is not an accurate reflection
of their writing ability. After all, a technical writer should be given
plenty of advance time to plan and prepare before the project is due.
(And to all the other whirlers out there, I am discussing a
Utopian/NeoPlatonic Technical Writing realm). Glaring grammatical
errors, atrocious style, and just plain bad writing-you'll probably be
able to weed out candidates, but I would use the writing/editing test
with the time constraint in mind.
