TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
And SPEAKING of nicknames of southern heads of state . . .
I moved here to Atlanta in 1984 for the tech writer position with
(now-defunct) Quadram Corp (maker of computer peripherals like memory
expansion boards, monitors, multifunction cards, etc.). (Yep, I was
"the" tech writer".)
Anyway, the folksy names used down here were and remain today a culture
shock to those who are just not used to seeing that stuff. My own
surname, Poshedly, is Slovak and in my hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, it
fit right in with everybody else in my eastern European neighborhood
near Corlett Ave. and E. 116 St., where Bryzowski, Dedonno, Grafton,
Grabazewski, Akeczewski,Rybarczyk and the like were all rattled off with
no problem.
But soon after moving here, all I got were questions about my surname. I
still tell folks, this is what I get in a state where they elect people
named Bubba, Sonny, and the like.
And those nicknames - as culturally accepted as they are down here - CAN
be a problem. For instance, about a dozen years ago or so, the political
machine that ran the Georgia state house of representatives pushed one
of its own members to run in the upcoming Democratic primary against the
already-announced Democratic candidate, Roy Barnes.
Problem was that the candidate backed by the political machine was
Lauren McDonald, but nobody knew him. Oh, yes they did. He was longtime
politician, Bubba McDonald.
Even though his supporters went through great pains to get the story
out, not enough people got it and Lauren (Bubba) was soundly trounced,
and Roy Barnes went on to win the primary and the general election to
become a really good governor.
Today, the governor of Georgia is (Republican) Sonny Perdue. And this
time, his given name is, in fact, "Sonny".

Subject: RE: /S/a/l/a/r/y/ ... er... I mean rates
How's this for a differential, Kevin? Rates in Canada on average equate
to the median of the US market dollar for dollar, that is, Cd$ X per
hour in one Canadian city is equated with US$ X p/h in a comparable US
city.
Unfortunately, a dollar is a dollar and Canada's real consumer price
index is roughly between 1.25 and 1.5 times that of the US. So in the
long run, the northerner's purchasing power is far less than his US
counterpart. Wanna test this hypothesis? Visit honda.com then compare
honda.ca!
By the way Gene, that's Ott*a*wa. Kinda like that Microsoft video
tutorial in which the instructor made consistent references to Loose
Jaw, Saskatchewan. Um...that's like...Moose Jaw! Loose Jaw indeed!
Sounds like the nickname of a southern head of state. :^ (Ok, I'll head
off the rebuttals now by saying "Who cares"! Anyway...I was just sayin')
