How do you measure #1? The concept is excellent, but it isn't really
measurable by bean counters or HR types. And that's what the game is all
about. It often seems to be a silly, political, totally unrealistic game,
but it is the game we have to play. The programmers, analysts and QA types
have to play it too, so claiming that "tech writing is different and you
can't measure it" doesn't cut it.
Here are some of the ones I've developed for scorecard reviews:
Reduce average time to delivery of XX type document/communication by X%.
Reduce rewrite/rework to # of revisions per guide.
(The first two require that somebody is tracking work requests)
Create documentation/communications plans for 90% of approved IT projects.
Execute XX% of approved doc/comm plans by year-end.
Achieve intermediate proficiency on ( framemaker, photoshop, documentum,
etc) tool by 2nd quarter.
Attend and pass #N classes that focus on (editing, outlining, MS Project,
writing specs, etc)
