I agree. My perspective was always that of an aircraft WCA (Warning,
Caution, Advisory) panel, where assorted indicators and problem monitor
and detection circuits are summed into a master panel, which in turn is
summed into a single indicator. 

The construction is similar to reporting up, pyramid style. You simply
need to determine the local parameters or criteria.
