Robert Pirsig who wrote "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" was a tech writer - and even expounds about it a bit in that book.
James P. Hogan - SF author - was a technical trainer at Digital Equipment back in the 70s and 80s.
Bob Asprin was a tech writer for IBM (even though
I know from personal experience that he is a lousy
speller :-> )
Also, Kevin J Anderson and Harry Turtledove worked
as technical writers.
