My understanding is that to deploy is to install a system or application across an enterprise. I have a copy of the Microsoft Office Administrator's Guide which concerns itself with deploying Office across an enterprise. As such, the application can be uninstalled from an individual client machine. To un-deploy (I'm in agreement that it should be hyphenated) would be to remove the application from all client machines.

The upshot is that to use un-deploy, the intent should be to remove the system or application across the entire enterprise; otherwise I'd suggest using uninstall.

One of my authors is working on specs for a deployment framework for our
system. He uses "undeploy" to name one of the required tasks. My
instincts say to change it to "remove", but Googling shows many tools
with an "undeploy" command.

The audience for the document is made up entirely of developers and
system administrators. Am I safe in retaining "undeploy"?

Thanks,

Jessica
