TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Only accept such contracts if your mind and soul are prepared for the
brutality of an e-mail notification that your project has been cancelled and
you are being requested to drive across New Jersey immediately (on your own
time at your own expense) to return all customer material.
Being requested to do something and actually doing it are two different
things. I have been in your situation and was asked to drive a considerable
distance (on my penny) to return all customer material. I declined, saying
that I would be mailing the material out that day, along with my invoice.
When the project manager demanded that I return the material ASAP, I told
them (gently of course) that I would expect my invoice to be paid upon
delivery. I was flabbergasted when he agreed. I delivered the material,
got my money, immediately cashed the check (at their bank so I knew it
wouldn't bounce) and never looked back. The company subsequently filed for
Chapter 11 and, I believe but I'm not sure, ended up liquidating. If the PM
did not agree to paying me upon delivery, then I would have followed through
with the U.S.P.S. route., and probably would have never seen that last
invoice paid.
