Re: Readability statistics: is anyone expected to meet a particular Flesch score?
During a recent project, I worked for a consulting company who was tasked
with creating a large client-server app for the state.
A true story:
Some years ago I had a contract gig working for a guy who had been a tech pubs manager at GE for many years. The story he told concerned a large contract to refurbish a fleet of subway cars for New York City. The plant was nearing the end of the job when someone noticed a requirement in the contract for maintenance documentation. Oops! They had only a few weeks to produce complete maintenance doc (thousands of pages, as you can imagine, covering every nut, bolt, and washer in a subway car) at--get this--a second grade reading level. They brought in every technical illustrator they could lay their hands on and basically provided comic-book-level documentation, down to picturing how to hold a lightbulb and which way to turn it to insert it in a socket.
Sixth grade? Heh. Piece of cake.
