You can add me to the list of former hiring managers ... but I never cared too much about long v. short resumes. In fact, I sort of prefer the long ones.

When I'm looking to fill a position, I look for all the information I can get. I want to see an overview of someone's career. How many jobs have they had? How long were they in each job? Has there been an uninterrupted upward trend in their level of responsibility? Are there any lengthy unexplained gaps? What sorts of application areas have they worked in? What trends can I detect in what they've done and where they've worked? Have they got large and/or small company experience? I like to see the whole thing laid out for me.

Granted, I don't go through this analysis for every resume. I go a Possible/Fuhgeddaboutit sort at the beginning, but making the first cut doesn't have anything to do with length of resume.

My 2¢,

John G

Myself, Steve Jong, Gene Kim-Eng, and Richard Combs either are currently,
or have been in the past, in a position to actually hire technical writers.
We are all advocating for resumes that are short and to-the-point.
