Might take a look at the standard Adobe PDF "paper" size called "Screen."
It's 6.5" wide x 5.18" high. I use this size with 0.13" margins (in Word).
With a set of TOC bookmarks on the left, I think it looks fine.
I've spent several hours checking out various eBook compilers, etc. Most are
a real PITA.

Subject: Misc: Particularly attractive book designs?
I'm beginning to research possible designs for an e-book I'll be
publishing in the next month or two (assuming I can escape this
"work" thang that occupies so many waking hours <g>). My plan is to
produce the e-book in landscape (horizontal) format so it fits better
on the screen.
I've got a few ideas for the design, but am the first to admit I'm
not a graphic designer. So: Do you have any favorite examples of such
books -- laid out in ***landsape*** format -- that you can recommend
as inspiration? (Ideally, with sample pages available online so I can
see how other authors have tackled this particular design challenge.)
Send along your suggestions, and I'll compile the results for
copyediting-l and techwr-l in a few days. TIA!
