At the late, lamented Second Avenue Deli here in New York City,
chopped liver was one of the best--and also most expensive--items on
the menu.  And once you tasted their chopped liver, the phrase "What
am I, chopped liver?" made about as much sense as, say, "What am I,
filet mignon?"

Being compensated well is all about demonstrating your value to the
business you're working for.  "I can solve these kinds of business
problems for you" will make you money, particularly where the problem
set in question involves things that other people do not like to do,
find challenging or just aren't very good at.
