I never bothered to learn the difference between direct and indirect
objects. I mean, who really cared about direct and indirect objects?
The only apparent difference is between "who" and "whom," and anyway,
who really used it correctly in conversation? No one in my circle of
friends.

I was bored in school, and pretty much drifted through doing the
minimum, including English. However, when I was in Germany, I very
quickly learned how important the distinction is.

The Catholic nuns will teach you grammar, and if you don't have a solid
grounding in grammar, learning a foreign language is a bear.

Learning a foreign language will teach you English grammar like no other
endeavor.

I'm another who writes grammatically, but seldom knows which grammar
terms
mean what. I struggled in a college Hebrew class because the professor,
an
Israeli linguist, used grammar and linguistic terms for everything and I
didn't know what they meant. I remember specifically an aha moment when
I
connected the meaning of the word "imperative" with one of the verb
tenses.
Things got better after that.

I edit a lot of engineering writing -- my frustration is seldom with
grammar, but with the style. They use passive voice incessantly, but
grammatically. And don't get me started about deadwood, jargon, and
business-speak.

2 cents (what the heck, it's cheap)

-Karen
