Hi Ken,

I was having this problem the other week. I'm not one hundred percent
sure how I fixed it, but I did come across this article which may be of
use to you.

Subject: Word numbering problem

'Nother Word glitch here.

For absolutely no reason I can think of, my numbered lists are now
defaulting to begin at No. 9 (like the weird, avante garde track on the
Beatles White Album, side 4). I've done nothing to change things, and
Word has beaten me down before. Because I'm a contractor, my supervisor
has no interest in allowing me to do the stuff in FrameMaker and wants
it in only in Word "so the engineers can work on it, too." (Eccchhhhh!)

I've tried right clicking on the entire first step only and choosing
Restart Numbering but it stays at "9".

I've tried right clicking on a grouping of the first several steps in
the list and choosing Restart Numbering but it stays at "9".

I've tried removing all line breaks between the steps, etc. and nothing
seems to get me back to begin the list at step 1.

But then it DOES work once in awhile and I've documented and repeated
everything over and over and tried repeating those steps exactly and it
still sticks at "9".

It all seems to involve the way the wind blows.

Exactly how to delve into the inner workings to find out WHY?

I've highlighted the line of text (all the way through the line break or
"hard return"), and tried Format > Bullets and Numbering and clicked on
the highlighted sample (which already matches the style I'm using).

At that dialog box (or menu, whatever), I click on Customize and see
that the "Start at" number is already "1". I backtrack with Cancel all
the way out from there so as not to inadvertently do something (else)
wrong.

By the way, it doesn't matter what the last numbered step might be on a
previous page - my first new step always starts with 9.

Harry Potter, where are you?

My page layout is like this:

1.0 Level 1 Heading

1.1 Level 2 Heading

Body Text 2 (indented an inch or so)

1. Numbered step

2. Numbered Step

3. Numbered step

Except the list looks like this

9. Numbered step

10. Numbered Step

11. Numbered step

And what complicates it even more is that if I highlight the first line
only, then right click on Restart Numbering, the first line stays at "9"
and the subsequent steps change to 1, 2 and 3 , etc.

Help!
