Re: Current trends in Authoring Tools?
...
I do hope that happens though. One format, one standard, for all platforms,
indivisible, with liberty and justice for all! But that's a FOSS commune
hippie talking. The proprietary world always seems to find a way to wreck
universal standards.
Competing standards is not just an artifact of 'the proprietary
world', though. Aren't there competing standards within the OS
community?
And *shouldn't* there be? It sounds nice to say that everyone should
be following the same standards, but what if different standards are
called for in different sitautions? What if someone devises a *better*
standard?
...
I want a universal XML schema that everyone can agree on. ...
We don't even have an *English* that everyone can agree on. And
honestly, I'm not sure that's a bad thing. I wouldn't want business
people and poets to speak or write the same way, and I woudln't
(neccessarily) want a poet to write the same way he speaks.
Universal standards are a pipe dream, like Esperanto. And you see how
well -that- caught on.
