A way to protect 'original' files is to 'Zip' them, and password the ZIP file.

You can list the ZIP file from within XP (in my experience)

Individually password protecting them does not have a high return on investment of your time.

You could put them in directories/folders, and set to "read only" all of the files, and also the directory/folder.

If you need one of the files , you can always get it. You would manipulate the setting of the docuemnts and the directory/folder when you need to

Hope this would be a different approach you could consider.

UGH! Is there a shortcut to get me at least as far as
the p-word entry screen? If not, anybody have any
good VB code? I tried recording a macro but get
snagged when I hit the P-word entry screen. I can't
stop recording the macro. Is it my imagination or am
I paid about 70% of my salary for patience alone?

I'm skeptical of the necessity of doing this at all - and not all that
inclined to trust people whose first action is to password-protect all the
documents they can lay their hands on. Although I know how to do what you
want using VBA, I'd like to ask about your reasons first.

There are other perfectly good ways of making sure that originals are
protected and backed up. What precisely are you trying to achieve here?
