In Word 2003 - try Tools > Options > General tab
In the top right corner there is an option to "Allow starting in Reading
layout" - turn it off.
Cheers,
Margaret

Subject: Getting Word to open in a different view
For some reason, Word 2003 keeps opening my documents in "Read" view by
default. And "Read" view is one of the worst imaginable formats for
actually reading most documents. I've tried everything I know to get it
to open my docs in "Print Layout" view (or "Normal," or just about any
view other that "Read"), but it keeps defaulting to "Read". Any
thoughts?
