TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Another added benefit to certification is that it will enable very
talented TWs who have either no degree or an AA degree, but who can
produce effective, useful documentation, to compete in the global
marketplace with TWs with advanced degrees, but who cannot produce
cohesive, effective work.

I think many of us like the idea of certification for the same reason
developers do: at this point, a college degree alone doesn't count for
much, nor is experience universally recognized, so a certification means
that even if the person hiring is total moron they can recognize a base
salary.
