Regarding Smith-Coronas . . . slightly OT but not much . . .

I recently attended a conference held at the BU student center (I forget what it's called). The upper floor, which I remember having a large central room with white formica flooring, glaring white fluorescent lights, and rackety chairs and tables, had been transformed into a hotel-style meeting room.

I remarked to my companion, "The last time I was here, I rented a manual typewriter over *there* for something like 50 cents an hour, and finished up one of my graduate school papers in a big ugly room that used to be here, with minutes to spare."

Computers did exist; in fact, personal computers existed. But no one yet expected humanities graduate students to know about them! (I was getting a Masters in Education.)

Nancy, still reminiscing about wearing a size 8
