The book "Microsoft Manual of Style for Technical Communicators"
talks about GUI elements. Maybe you could use the order they use
as an example.

Well, no one ever said I was wise :-) and that is my refuge, but
I'm afraid I don't understand what exactly you mean by
"hierarchical order". You seem to imply that there is some
prioritization or other type of ordering, or a parent-child
relationship...? As far as I know, there are several different
ways to create a GUI window; different programming languages,
IDEs, toolkits, GUI engines... The way in which a Visual Basic 6
programmer designs a window/dialog is quite different,
conceptually, from how a Java programmer would do it with AWT or
other toolkits, or from how a Tcl/Tk programmer would do it.
The hierarchy of containment elements/layout managers/container
controls... there are similarities, but they're not identical.

Now you've explained _why_ you want the information you're
seeking (which is good and helpful). To the best of my knowledge,
there is no such thing as "the" hierarchy here (but I'd be very
happy to be told I'm wrong, because I'd be learning something
new!) I think it would be a good idea if you explained, in as
verbose a manner as possible, exactly what you mean by
"hierarchical order"; that may help other, much more experienced
and wiser people respond to your post.

Regards,
Ed.
