While I agree that littering a paragraph with bold is not a good idea, a sensible use of typographic styles within a paragraph does aid in both legibility and readability. The key here, of course, is _sensible use_. What's sensible? Well, that depends on context of course and what one's ultimate goal is for the documentation. This might take some trial-and-error design work to find what works and what leads to "littering" but as documentation professionals, that is our job--among many other dutities according to some recent threads. ;-) So, I don't see a problem with that.
