Rule of thumb: congrats, everybody found it. It might be innocuous to a
white middle-aged upper-income male, where it absolutely is not innocuous to
a survivor of domestic abuse or someone whose great-grandfather was owned.
Survivors and slave descendents have told us that they don't want to see
this phrase any more. That should be all that's needed.

A good presentation about the importance of the influence of language as
well as its literal (or contextual) meaning can be found at
http://chancellor.tennessee.edu/facultyhandbook/appendix4.shtml .

Dog and pony show: from

aps&field-keywords=handbook+of+non-sexist+writing, _The Handbook of
Non-Sexist Writing_ -- wow, it's very popular so it's been tremenously
sanitized on the 'net. The original very popular Victorian stage shows
involved dogs, ponies, and women. Nuff said. It's a phrase we don't need.
