One option, as David suggested, would be a
forum-to-mail gateway. This would mail new forum posts
to subscribers, and post new subscriber mail to the
forums.

I think at least one forum software type has this as
an option, but it's not my area of expertise. Although
some of you may want to kill me for this, a forum-list
as described above is the perfect complement to a Wiki
for enduring definitions, and a blog to post summaries
of anything learned.
