My first thought is I wouldn't take that offer with a 10 foot pole.
Doing it on your own time removes any committment. Half way through,
you loose interest, your paying part becomes too busy, whatever...You
have no committment to coninue and they've devoted costly resources
toward a project.

Your boss is going to think "pay or no pay, own time or not...this
could affect his performance."

Your legal department is going to be concerned about the
ramifications of having you work for free.

I have three or four other issues I won't even go into.
