In July 2006 I used the services of a career transition company to evaluate
my job options. I was leaning toward technical writing because it is my core
competency. The database of jobs titles I had access to indicated that there
were 50,000 technical writers in the US and the growth rate was 20%+. Don't
have access to the database anymore.

By the way, regarding the other thread, I'm a freelance writer, work from
home, and I love my job.
