FYI, as a manager I have, of course, always known what all of
my reports have been paid. On average, my salary as a manager
has generally been no more than 10% higher than the salary of
my highest graded and ranked reports. There are other higher
items, of course, such as slightly higher percentages on the profit
sharing and stock option scales, but these have not been more
than an additional 20%, and also been mostly trivial. Whatever
drives anyone's interest in taking a first or mid level management
position, it should not be the expectation of a significant increase
in compensation.
