Yes, $18,000 seems unusually low. Maybe it's an outdated figure?

In Orange County, California, teachers start around $35,000 a year, with the maximum salary around $75,000.

I wanted to be an English teacher for years, but when I worked as a tutor in college, I realized I wouldn't be able to deal with the parents. Too many parents sabotaging their own children's education. I knew I'd eventually lose it.

I was a college mathematics instructor for nearly 15 years. I loved to
teach. Unfortunately, it didn't pay very well (certainly not as well as
I currently make). A few notes to what has been said:

> A math teacher with a masters degree was being offered a starting
salary of $18,000 a year in the public schools.

I'm not sure what state you are in; in Washington State, a beginning
teacher will make about $30,000, while an experienced teacher will
almost earn $60,000.
(http://www.k12.wa.us/SAFS/PUB/PER/SalAllocSchedule.pdf). Both numbers
are less than what I make.

an HOUR.

Most likely, the truck-driving teacher would be a part-time or
"non-tenure-track" teacher. Although $35 an hour sounds impressive,
most vocational or community college instructors are paid for no more
than 15 hours a week. The $35/hour figure includes making up lesson
plans and tests, grading tests, issuing final grades, etc, and comes out
to about $12 an hour. In addition, you may not have any benefits or
other niceties, such as an office that is not a storage closet shared by
a dozen teachers (no exaggeration -- been there, done that).

I will stick with writing in a software company. :)
