Tech writers get paid more when the demand for tech writers goes up
relative to the supply.

Tech writers get paid less when the supply of tech writers goes up
relative to the demand.

Perception, status, professional designation, respect -- none of those
matter except to the degree (rather small, IMO) that they may influence
the demand or supply.
