TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
When helping my students job search, I refer them to Barron's, or any other
good business directory/database. Your local library or university library
will have subscriptions to this type of information. These directories
detail companies in an objective way, and usually provide statistics such as
employee turnover (which may indicate satisfaction), related companies, and
revenue history.
Business magazines (again, I recommend a library search rather than just a
web search for this info) give you commentary by business analysts.
A third avenue for information is to review the stock watch sites such as
Morningstar.com that provide background info on businesses from a financial
perspective. You have to dig a fair bit for the info, but it might be
useful.
An afternoon spent with your local research librarian will yield many
benefits, and make your search a lot easier. :-)

Can anyone suggest a website that gives background information about
employers? Or can you tell me how to go about researching an employer's
reputation as far as pay, treatment of employees, corporate environment,
etc.? I'm looking for a job in a different state so I'm unfamiliar with
many of the companies I'm applying to.
