The problem with not using a phrase anbd trying to substitute
something else is that you have to explain it, which you've had to do
and wouldn't have if you'd used sanity check.

We use the term for software also. If you load the program and put it
through a series of standard simple tests and the application doesn't
go up in smoke, it's passed the smoke test.
