There's several parts here:

1) Understanding the product.
2) Understanding the context in which it operates
technologically.
3) Understanding the context in which it operates
culturally, such as "Web 2.0" and other
expectation-based cultures of familiarity.
4) Understanding the users.
5) Understanding the task.
