Kevin McGowan wondered: <<Does anyone use the Master Document feature
in Word?>>
Many do, and many end up heartbroken and desperately trying to
recover corrupted documents. For the scary details, see: http://
word.mvps.org/FAQS/General/WhyMasterDocsCorrupt.htm
I'm not sure whether this problem still affects the most recent
versions of Word*, and some people do use the feature successfully.
But given the large number of anecdotal reports of disaster, and the
fact that even the Word MVP folk advocate caution, it's not a feature
I'd feel safe trying.
* Amusingly, when I just loaded the page, the status bar at the
bottom stated "Last updated Wed. Dec. 31 2069 7 PM". I wonder if they
know something we don't? <g>
For alternatives to Master Docs, check the techwr-l archives using
"master docs" or "master documents" as search terms to turn up
details on using reference fields to simulate the feature more safely.
