Not only that, but a technical knowledge requirement that used to be
only needed by the most technical of writers is working its way down
the line.
10 years ago, only a small percentage of my gigs required me to have
any SQL knowledge. Now, I can't tweak the query that produces my bug
reports without some knowledge of sql and/or boolean. 10 years ago,
where I was documenting small home-grown UNIX tools that took four
pages each, now I'm installing and configuring enterprise UNIX
applications and it is knowledge expected by anyone who walks in to
this department.
Granted, you can't produce quality coherent documentation without
solid writer skills. However, with those skills or not, you can't
produce quality technical content without knowlege of the subject and
technology that you are writing about.
