It's getting there. As long as technical writers do
one thing, which is write the manual, they're going to
be called in at the end of development to WTFM and
then get out. Looking at it from the employer's point
of view, there is then little point in hiring them
full-time.
I've already seen what you are documenting here in the
job market in my local area, and it's a change from
even six months ago. If the profession doesn't wake up
and adapt, it's going to become very contract-oriented
with corresponding loss of opportunity.
