If it's in running text or step-by-step instructions, I'll often use a
left-margin icon. Most of the style sheets I've worked with lately have a
wider left margin, used for headings. As an added benefit, placing the
bit maps in that margin gives readers a visual fast-track through the
steps, if they're just trying to recall how to perform a seldom-used
task.

If it's in an interface description, I generally use a "To do this..."
table with common tasks in the first column, followed by bit map of the
tool, then tool name.
