Mark Levinson wrote in response to my statement that I could not find
"and/or" in the dictionary:
That's an entirely different "and/or" problem.
You searched electronically, and the slash was
understood as a delimiter. But "and/or" is in
all those dictionaries. You may have better
luck sneaking up on them indirectly through
www.onelook.com.
I also looked through my Merriam-Webster hard-copy at home and did not find
it. Also, just because it is in the dictionary, does not mean it's good
writing. Good writing involves how we put those words together. In our
profession, clarity is paramount, and "and/or" is not clear. If the phrase
is unclear in it's native language, that lack of clarity is compounded when
the writing is translated into numerous other languages.
