I do not entertain political discussions during interviews, ever. You are now in a situation where it is best to consult the company lawyer for guidance.
Politics, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, color, disability, national origin, and what oil you use in your car have no bearing on the job at hand. I would be concerned about any job position or candidate where any of these considerations were a primary selection criteria.
I would hope that we are paid to perform a job, not hold an opinion.
I'm with Gene that the manager's job is to set boundaries here. Politics has no place in the workplace. Unless of course you work for a political party. ;-)
I personally have worked effectively with people who have political leanings all over the map. It doesn't matter unless you make it matter.
By the way, I read that the all male make-up of the famous Vienna orchestra once used the argument that the introduction of women would disrupt the harmony of the orchestra.
I laugh and laugh. :-)

Subject: FWD: Employment question
<snip>
The question is, would it be ethical to deny employment to a person
(otherwise eminently qualified) based on his/her political views, though
the real reason is never mentioned? On the other hand, is a new person
(however well qualified) worth the possible disruption (97% possibility)
to the sense of good will in the team?
