Also, if you can't (due to lack of Unix skills) get some hands-on time
exploring an Oracle installation, the next best thing for you would be
to ask someone to take a few minutes to show you an existing Oracle
installation,including the locations of things mentioned in the bat and
ora files. It will make much more sense to you once you grasp what the
bat and ora files are doing (if you don't already grasp it).

I think the use of the elegant word 'accordingly' is an example of a
programmer expressing admiration for the elegant simplicity of
configuring a database with a couple of script files. Sort of a case of
'Where rhetoric meets reality', to borrow an apt expression from an old
Life magazine cover photo caption (photo of a jet taking off from
National Airport, with the Washington Monument in the background).
