I think you are right, Anon, that part of the "joys"
of management is greater responsibility and sacrifice.
But it's possible that there are other ways of solving
the business problem of support from 4:30 to 5:30. For
example, maybe one of the less senior people would
prefer to come in later and stay later. If it's
important to have a senior writer available, maybe you
and the manager could be on call during your commuting
time for emergencies? Perhaps these aren't the precise
solutions, but no doubt solutions can be found with
good will.
