I don't know about beef because I'm vegetarian, but here's my take on PMI,
PMP Certification, and Scope Planning.

Project Management International (PMI) was, from my understanding,
established so that project managers could share ideas about project
management and help to define the core concepts of project management. PMI
periodically releases its version of the current state of project management
in its "Project Management Body of Knowledge" (PMBOK). PMI later developed
a certification program so that project managers can learn the current state
of project mangement tools and methodologies and demonstrate that knowledge.
The primary certification is the Project Management Professional (PMP), but
they also have a certification for people working towards PMP and they are
expanding to include a certification for program managers, but that
certification is limited to people that are hand-chosen.

Project managers use a variety of tools and methodologies to manage projects
and there is no "right way" to manage a project, however, there are common
elements to each project. Every project shares the same phases of
initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, and closing.
Within these phases are certain disciplines, not every project will have all
of the disciplines. PMP certification is helpful because project managers
that take the PMP exam must demonstrate knowledge of all of the areas and
most of the disciplines involved in those areas. This knowledge becomes a
collection of tools and methodologies for project managers to use in future
projects. The certification demonstrates that a project manager possesses
these tools and methodologies.

Scope Planning belongs to the Planning Phase of project management.
Projects are initiated because there is a need for the project. The need is
generally supported with business and functional requirements. The scope is
the range of work and resources that is covered to meet those requirements
and analysis of alternatives that shows the alternatives will not meet the
requirements. PMBOK states that inputs to Scope Planning are the product
description, the project charter, constraints, and assumptions. Techniques
to determine the scope can vary by project manager and project managers may
discuss different methods to perform this analysis. From an older version
of PMBOK, tools and techniques for Scope planning include product analysis,
benefit/cost analysis, alternatives identification, and expert judgment.
