I recall a source (maybe a Microsoft publication) that said an icon was a representation of a thing, such as a storage device, a printer, another computer, a software program, etc. A button represents an action.
They were roughly analogous to?nouns and?verbs, respectively.
Links take you to somewhere (such as a web page or a bookmark) and they can be text, graphics or both.
