Those form field check boxes behave as you would expect if you lock the
document using the padlock icon in the forms toolbar. No editing is
possible when this selection is made. You can choose to lock specific
sections, leaving other sections available for editing, but this is
often not very useful.

Subject: MS Word checkbox
I want to use checkbox on an MS Word template without using any of the
following:
the Forms feature; the protect/unprotect document option that is listed
in the Tools menu; the Forms tool bar padlock; adding a macro.
So far, I have done this:
1. Use the forms tool bar: View > Tool bar > Forms.
2. Click the checkbox tool and added it to the document.
When I try using the checkbox form field (from the Forms tool bar), I
must double-click the checkbox ,and then select from the pop-up window
the default value as checked or unchecked.
I'm told that the trick is for the user to check the box is to hover the
cursor directly over it. I have tried this, but I don't get an X'd
checkbox right away, first I get a pop-up window, "Checkbox Form Field
Options."
I want to the user to be able to select the checkbox without going into
the Checkbox Form Field Options; instead, I want the user to simply
single-click the checkbox.
Can this be done?
I apologize if this question has been asked before.
