Not being in the software industry I've no expertise on this, but
it was my understanding that the code for any program can be
decompiled and recovered. Perhaps the real problem is not so
much that the code is lost, but that the people who originally
wrote it and understand what it does and how have moved on,
leaving those in charge today with sections of the program that
work, but nobody in-house who knows how or why they do.
I have long suspected that Adobe is in just that situation with
certain portions of FrameMaker.
