Yes, this is one of the primary reasons why you should *always* use styles
with numbering in a long document and not attempt to use the bullets and
numbering as direct formatting under any circumstances at all. You can then
strip off all manually applied numbering, and then apply your predefined
styles, and all is well. It is easy once you know how.
